Story / explanation

This song deals with the ongoing conflicts in the academic area of theoretical physics — in particular, string theories vs. other possible unifications of gravity and quantum physics. Also, this song depicts an intervowen story of two lovers travelling to a distant black hole to engage in quantum physics research.

Behind the scenes

This song started out as an offshoot from the original “Space, Time, Matter” song (now renamed and yet to be announced). It started out as a few riffs, and for some reason I wrote it off as a bad idea. However, LadyLau recorded some vocals and emailed to me, and that sparked inspiration to complete the entire eight minute epos.

Background

Much of the inspiration for the lyrics came while I was reading a book by Lee Smolin called “The Trouble With Physics: The Rise of String Theory, the Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next“. This book describes how the rise of string theory may be hurting science as we know it by becoming an established but untestable theory, and how it has sparked a conflict between various “camps” in the field of fundamental physics — that’s the “war between the headstrong” (see lyrics below).
